The following incidents are proof of it: Boy--Mother dead; father drunkard, unable to read, write or recognize a letter. The Association befriended, safeguarded and taught him to read and write. Young Man--Regular attendant at gambling center; as result of personal touch with secretary is teaching night school classes and spending his "gambling nights" in the Association reading room. A Six Months' Investment--A man forty-nine years of age, himself and family illiterate, working as a machine hand, took a six months' night school course in Association, learned his A, B, C's and read through the Third Reader. Also learned simple subtraction, addition, multiplication and division. Promoted to master mechanic's position and has been promoted since. In the meantime the entire family have joined the church. Example Counts--"Haven't smoked a cigarette in a week," said a boy of twelve to a secretary. "I want to be as good a fellow as you are." An Operator's Opinion--"If I did not know that the Association paid us I would cut off our appropriation to it at once." Another operator says: "Whether we make dividends or not our people must be taken care of and made better. The Association is doing 30 per cent, better than I had hoped for when we opened the building." Loafers Disappear--When the Association opened, the habitual corner-store loafers disappeared as by magic. They are all at the Y. M. C. A., testifies a store manager.
